Mastery Seminar 8 -  Jumping courses: grids, single jumps, multiple jumps

Grids

Grids are used to enhance the flexibility and absorbency of the 'springs' of the rider (ie the riders legs!)

Grids are easier for horses, too.  The hardest thing for a horse to do is go over a single pole sitting on the ground.

In the same distance, horses move:

3 walk strides
2 long trot strides
1 canter stride

Grids are set up in 5's and built up from the last element forward:

starting grid next grid next grid next grid etc
1 ground pole ground pole ground pole small vertical small vertical
2 ground pole ground pole ground pole ground pole ground pole
3 ground pole ground pole small vertical small vertical small vertical
4 ground pole ground pole ground pole ground pole small vertical
5 ground pole small vertical small vertical small vertical small vertical
ie p p p p p p p p p v p p v p v v p v p v  v p v v v

Taking a Grid/Fence

1 Feel the 1st element of the grid / fence Before the Line
2 Prepare for the turn; Turn
3 Prepare for the line; Move onto the line
4 Feel the end of the grid / other side of the fence Before Jump
5 Prepare for light seat; be in light seat 3 strides out
6 Blow out the candle 1 stride out In Jump
7 Let horse compress you  like an accordion
8 Let legs rise and fall as horse goes over elements
9 Maintain light seat for 3 strides after grid After Jump

3 Types of Fences
